Rave: NASA Goddard Visitor Center

My wife an I like to take day trips around Maryland and surrounding states. Recently we visited the NASA Goddard Visitor Center. The visitor center is adjacent to the NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center in Greenbelt Maryland. It's a small place, just a few rooms but is richly appointed with space related displays. One of my favorites was a scale model of the International Space Station with tiny astronaut figures showing just how large this manned satellite is. It's huge.

As luck would have it, the 90+ degree Sunday visited was the first Sunday of the month. On that day the NARHAMS Model Rocket Club conducts a free build and launch your own rocket activity for kids and adults. I didn't participate having built and launched rockets as a teen and not wanting to stand in the long slow line in the hot sun.

There's plenty of free parking and as usual with these federal facilities admission is free. The one disappointment was the visitor shop. Some of the posters on display at the visitor center would have made great for sale souvenirs at the shop. One such poster shows the various unmanned space probes under supervision of Goddard.

Those STUPID tumbling sports logos!

If you watch sports you may have noticed how producers have adopted this practice of displaying a tumbling logo for transitions between replays and live action. The logos tend to be self promotional. There's the tumbling NFL shield, the MLB shield, the ESPN logo, the WTA logo. You get the gist. What's so annoying about this gimmick is at least half the time blots out the key moment in the replay being transitioned from. Hey sports programmers. The point of a replay is to show the fan a key moment in a play. We don't need to constantly see your stupid tumbling logo.
